About ACT-SO: The Olympics of the Mind
For over 30 years, the Altadena branch has maintained an ACT-SO program (Afro-Academic, Cultural Technological & Scientific Olympics). This is an enrichment program and competition for high school students. It gives youth a chance to showcase their skills and abilities. They can do this in a supportive, nurturing environment involving the sciences, humanities, performing arts, and visual arts. It offers a benefit similar to after school programs. These programs are no longer available in public schools due to the deep cuts in the public education budgets.
ACT-SO participants are active in many community events and programs throughout the year. They are supported by a dedicated all-volunteer staff. ACT-SO alumni serve as coaches, mentors, and judges. They work alongside outstanding academic and artistic professionals. These professionals volunteer their time and talent. This ensures the teens get the highest exposure and understanding of their interest.

What categories can you compete in?
ACT-SO inspires young Black students to expand their horizons and share their talent. From performing and culinary arts to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), students can demonstrate their talents in up to three competition areas. What do they have to lose?
There are 33 subcategories that fall under the six main categories listed. To learn more about what the subcategories are, click here. (We’re sure your student has something to contribute.)
